6 African Countries You’ve Probably Never Considered Travelling To

Whilst tourism on the continent has increased in recent years, large parts of Africa are still waiting to be discovered.

With amazing wildlife, some of the world’s best beaches, friendly locals and breathtaking mountains, there’s a lot waiting for those who travel to Africa.

Looking to get off the beaten path? Here are six African countries you’ve probably considered travelling to.

BOTSWANA

One of the most sought-after wilderness destinations in the world, Botswana is the place to go on safari. It’s natural beauty at its best.

Make sure you visit the Okavango Delta, a wetland system that covers around 16,000 square kilometers – full of channels, lagoons and islands that support a wealth of fauna and flora.

ETHIOPIA

If you head to Ethiopia, the small town of Lalibela comes highly recommended. It’s home to a complex of 13 churches that have been chiselled out of solid rock.

Because these churches still function under their original purpose, it’s not unusual to see monks in the stone corridors that link these incredible sites.

MOROCCO

Although in North Africa, Morocco also sits on the outskirts on Europe, making it one of the easier destinations to each. It’s full of culture and, according to this guide, no visit to the country is complete without visiting Djemma el Fna in Marrakech.

This square comes to life from 10am with street theatres, henna tattoo artists and snake charmers. For night owls, activity continues throughout the evening with the arrival of an array of chefs and food masters.

LESOTHO

As Africa’s mountain kingdom, Lesotho is a must-visit for adventure seekers. Whether you want to trek along the rivers, ride a pony in the mountains or see the dinosaur footprints in Tsikoane village, there’s something for everyone in this great country.

TANZANIA

If you’re looking for somewhere you can relax on a beautiful beach and snorkel around coral reefs, head to Tanzania’s hidden gem – Pemba Island.

Take a 30-minute flight from Stone Town airport in Zanzibar and you’ll be met with healthy coral reefs, mangroves, lagoons and fish. It’s the perfect African destination for keen divers, as well as beach lovers.

RWANDA

In Rwanda, you can visit the largest tropical forest in Africa, found in Nyungwe. Head to the Volcanoes National Park to trek and see mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.
