Go With The Flow: Here’s Why A River Cruise Should Be On Your Bucket List

There’s something so relaxing about being out on the water, and if you’re a fan of this kind of vacation then chances are you’re no stranger to a cruise. However, did you know that you can do more than just cruise on the ocean?

A cruise that takes you along the rivers and canals of some of the world’s most interesting countries. Here are just a few of the reasons this kind of trip needs to be on your bucket list!

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT A RIVER CRUISE?

Rivers were once essential for things like transportation, food, and power. Society quite literally depended on them, and for this reason, many of the greatest built-up areas in the world were developed right around them- so travelling by river will take you right to the heart of the action. We no longer need rivers as a mode of transportation, so now they can be enjoyed for leisure.

It’s a far more relaxing way to get around than a crowded bus, or in a car on a traffic-packed road. You get to enjoy the slow yet relaxed pace on a spacious and luxurious river cruise boat, and plus it’s something a little different too. If you’re guilty of going on the same vacations, or maybe you’re very well travelled and feel like you’ve done most things. Chances are, you’ve not done something like this.

WHERE CAN I GO? WHAT CAN I SEE ON A RIVER CRUISE?

Lots of places across the world offer river cruises, and you can explore the great Amazon river, the Nile or the Yangtze in China this way. However due to the number of rivers and canals in Europe, this is a particularly good place to go on a river cruise.

There are lots of interesting places to explore, take Holland for example, the capital Amsterdam has numerous canals which are considered to be some of the most beautiful in the world. These are perfect for river cruising. In Europe you also have The Danube river which runs across ten countries in Europe. If you book a tour that travels the entire length, it gives you the chance to see and experience lots of places on one trip.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A RIVER CRUISE AND BARGE BOATING?

Barge boating is fun, but it’s not particularly glamorous. River cruises on the other hand, much like ocean cruises are far more luxurious. The boat is bigger and well equipped, you will feel like you’re on a cruise and not just camping on a boat! Of course, the boat itself and the amenities will vary depending on which company you go with and your destinations, but they will usually have a lounge, bar, restaurant and sky deck amongst other things.

Higher end boats will have things like shops, a gym, salons, saunas, bars and restaurants. Do your research when you book to find out what the company you’re looking at offers.
